“The mother of excess is not joy but joylessness.” -Friedrich Nietzsche
We live in the age of the consumer. It would seem that everything we do in life from going to work, to eating, to play-is based on consumption. Consumption of the newest and greatest things- cars, electronic gadgets, exotic foods, truly, in the minds of most; the one with the most toys wins. Along with this- think of other resources that are consumed profusely such as fossil fuels or precious metals. This provides status within the group and a form of safety, but consumerism is also a form of control.
From this need to consume on such a massive scale we see the after effects-obesity, nervous disorders, crime, the over-consumption of resources, war. From the death of a single individual to the destruction of entire civilizations, all of this can be attributed, at least in part, to excessive behavior and over-consumption.
Do not be enslaved by this mindset. This can be done by becoming a producer of things rather than a consumer. Add to the liberation of society in general, eschew enslavement. If of course, one wishes to remain in such a mindset, do not attempt to change them. Allow them to stay in the matrix as it were, do not waste your energy.
Instead find ways to make their energy work for you and your ends, as harsh as this may sound.
Excess then, can be boiled down to a form of extreme want and we can see from the current world around us that excess is very dangerous to ones existence. To break this consumption based form of mortality it would be wise to become balanced in all ways. Stop the process of want, end the need to consume for it is a destructive process and only ends when everything and everyone are gone. Avoid excess unless it is your intent to use it to destroy. Instead, become a producer, create anything that will add to the beneficence of humanity or at the very least to yourself.
