What at thrill to watch the Olympics – seeing the amazing feats of human accomplishment, the dedication of the athletes and the emotional hysteria of the crowds!
But how does a philosophy like “The Secret” hold up under these circumstances?
We are looking at an environment of intense devotion and desire, goal-setting, visualization, and single-minded focus. Each competitors actions harmonize with their mental preparation. Seems to me like everyone should win the gold!
The problem is that in a “closed conclusion” situation (there can only be one Gold medal, one winner), the clash of two or more opposing human wills is going to be decided on other factors than who was best able to “dictate to the universe” the outcome. These factors are sometimes within our control (training, mental conditioning, etc.) but often out of our control (genetics makeup of our body, factors of environment, equipment, the actions of other competitors, judges, etc.)
We frankly can not dictate to the universe the outcome of events. If we stake our happiness on such a belief, we will end up disappointed. Even if our only goal is just to keep breathing, so far no one in history has been able to overrule the Universe on that one.
Set goals, yes. But live for values, not goals. When we align our goals in the areas of happiness, health, wealth and wisdom with our highest values, then we can experience fulfillment and the joy of accomplishment every day, not “someday maybe”.
