Your Presentation Stinks (sorry, it does) - Proposal #162

Most presentations stink.

You know this because you’ve sat through them. Someone gets up and starts yammering. You know you’re in trouble from the get go: a self-serving hyperbole-laden introduction, the title slide with a fancy piece of animated clipart on it, and maybe, just maybe, the dreaded slide number in the lower corner that lets you know you’re on slide 1 of “Holy Crap…How Many?!?”

Here’s what you may not realize…your presentations stink too. Sorry, but they do. Someone has say it. Somewhere along the way the word “presentation” got linked with the following falsehoods:

> I must have a lengthy and elaborate slide deck

> I must use clipart and make things spin, bounce, and jiggle

> I must make a slide with bullet points and many words to spell out everything I plan to say

> I must say things in as many words as possible to sound smart and credible

> I must use every minute granted to me for my presentation

> I must stand still, read from my slides, make cursory eye contact, and not modulate my voice whatsoever

> Before my presentation is over I must make people want to cause grave physical harm to themselves and others

In this manifesto you will learn the 5 things needed to unstinkify your presentations and make you a superstar of the stage. To wit:

> If you’re boring, people will be bored. If you’re interesting, people will be ___________ (fill in the blank)

> Tell stories

> Make pictures, not words

> Be Chris Rock (trust me…it makes sense)

> Brevity

Presentations can be fun, engaging, and empowering if they don't stink. Consider this manifesto your deodorant.
